A 48" round seats 4–6 guests, a 60" round seats 8 comfortably (10 at a squeeze), and a 72" round seats 10–12. You can always add one more chair, but then guests spend the evening bumping elbows. If the venue allows, add a table rather than cramming seats.

Plan for 24–30 inches of table edge per person. 24" is the minimum for eating comfortably; 30" is the sweet spot for a four-to-five hour reception. For a rectangular banquet table, divide its length by 27 inches and round down — an 8-foot table seats 8 (three per side plus one at each end).

Leave at least 5 feet between table edges: roughly 2 feet for a pushed-back chair on each side, plus a walkway for servers. For plated service, give it 6 feet. Main paths to the exit, bar and dance floor should be 6–8 feet wide.

With 60" rounds seating 8: 50 guests need 7 tables, 100 guests need 13, and 150 guests need 19. Always round up and keep one spare — a couple of late RSVPs appear in the final week almost every time.

Start a draft as soon as most RSVPs are in, usually 4–6 weeks out. Lock the final version 5–7 days before the wedding — the guest list keeps shifting until then. Leave 2–3 days for printing escort cards and the seating display, or a week if a stationer prints them for you.

A sweetheart table (just the two of you) keeps the focus on the couple and avoids choosing who sits at the head table. A head table with the wedding party works well when you want your closest people around you. Either way, place it where every guest can see you, with parents and grandparents at the nearest tables.

Give each parent their own table, at an equal distance from the couple, and not directly facing each other. Seat new partners with them — separating couples is worse. And let both know in advance where they'll be sitting; finding out at the door is never pleasant.

Only if you have six or more children of similar age (roughly 5–12) and someone to keep them busy. Otherwise seat kids with their parents. Place tables with children closer to the exit and away from the speakers.

Away from the speakers and the dance floor, close to restrooms and the exit, and not in a busy walkway. Loud music is the number one reason older guests leave early. If someone uses a walker or wheelchair, keep an end seat free with a clear path to it.

Remove their escort card and leave everyone else where they are — an empty chair is far less noticeable than a reshuffled table nobody was told about. If guests look up their seat through a QR code, just update it online: the change is free and instant.
